Calycanthus

These hardy, vigorous-growing, deciduous shrubs are found wild in the United States. Commonly known as Allspice or Sweet Shrub, these plants are grown for their fragrant bark and blossoms. C. floridus (Carolina Allspice) is a medium-sized shrub with aromatic, shiny, dark green foliage. Its brownish-red flowers consist of numerous, strap-shaped petals and are produced over a long period in the summer.

Pot Cultivation

Allspice can be grown in regular garden soil. They may be planted in the spring or fall. Regular pruning isn't necessary.

Propagation

Seeds may be sown in containers of sandy loam in March or April. Plants may be divided in the spring. Cuttings can also be taken in July and inserted in sandy soil in a propagating case in a greenhouse or frame.
